Beacon Rock Beginning

Updated: Sep 17

Beacon Rock began not as an idea, but as a journey…one shaped by love, uncertainty, and an unshakable faith. Tim and Mariah Harle of Southern Illinois never imagined their story would look different from so many others. With two daughters, Hailey and Raegen, their life was full of the ordinary joys of family. Raegen, their youngest, was developing differently. Though her birth was “normal,” the milestones didn’t come as expected. Speech was delayed. Sleep was restless. And deep in a mother’s heart, Mariah knew something was different.

Appointment after appointment brought the same reassurance: “She’ll catch up, just give it time.” But time told a different story. By age 3, when Raegen finally said “mom,” hope flickered, only to be followed again by waiting. As the years passed, the gap between Raegen and her peers widened. Therapies were pursued, resources were exhausted, and still, answers remained out of reach. Even genetic testing was denied. There simply wasn’t enough evidence. Through it all, Raegen remained a bright, joyful light, full of energy and love. But behind that joy was a family praying earnestly for clarity, direction, and peace. Then, in 2023, everything changed. A neurologist ordered genetic testing. Months later, the answer finally came. Raegen was diagnosed with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome, a rare developmental disorder. Relief and grief arrived hand in hand. After years of wondering, they finally knew. But the diagnosis brought a flood of new questions. Why her? What now? What does the future hold? Through prayer and reflection, God began to gently reshape their understanding. Their future would

look different. They would not experience a typical “empty nest.” Their role as parents would extend into lifelong guardianship. Dreams shifted. Expectations changed. And in the weight of it all, there was both fear and a calling. In the years that followed, Raegen found stability. Her smile is real and her hugs are tight. Her joy deepened. She continued to thrive in her own way, reminding everyone around her what unconditional love looks like. Their oldest daughter, Hailey, married—bringing a season of celebration and gratitude. And through every high and low, the Harles learned to walk forward with grace, even when the path felt uncertain.

But one question never left them:

What happens next?

Like so many families, they discovered a sobering reality….after high school, options for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are incredibly limited. Nearly 70% have nowhere to go. Nowhere to grow. Nowhere to belong. And an even harder question lingered: What will happen to Raegen when we are no longer here? What began as concern turned into conviction. Through prayer, research, and visits to communities across the country, a vision began to take shape…clear, bold, and deeply rooted in faith. Beacon Rock was born from that vision. A place where adults like Raegen are not defined by limitations but celebrated for who they are. A place where they can live, learn, work, and build meaningful relationships. A place grounded in love, dignity, and purpose. Set in the quiet beauty of rural Southern Illinois, Beacon Rock is envisioned as a 120-acre, faith-based community where life slows down and meaning grows deep. Here, residents engage in simple, life-giving rhythms, tending gardens, caring for animals, learning new skills, and contributing in ways that matter. It will be a place of belonging. A place of joy. A place where every individual is seen, valued, and empowered to live out their God-given potential. Beacon Rock is more than a dream. It is a response to a need, a calling answered, and a future being built with a Christ centered faith at its foundation. And this is only the beginning.
